Top Ten Teen Books of 2015

Now that I'm working full-time as a young adult librarian I haven't been posting nearly as much, but I wanted to at least do my end of the year lists! 1) Ms. Marvel: Generation Why by G. Willow Wilson I love this comic series overall, but this one so clearly nails a lot of the things I've heard from teens recently. Their annoyance at older generations misjudging and underestimating them, their ability to come together despite differences, and their genuine desire to make their worlds a better place. Kamala Khan is just a fabulous protagonist overall, relatably trying to juggle her friends, family, faith, education, and, oh yeah, newfound superpowers. Plus, the cameos. The cameos. So many familiar faces from the Marvel universe have appeared, which is especially fun because Kamala is such an unabashed fangirl. I really can't praise this series highly enough- just go check it out for yourself. 2) Lumberjanes by Noelle Stevenson Sensing a theme? 2015 was a huge year for ...

The Voices by F.R. Tallis

Summary from Goodreads Once you've heard them, you'll never forget them . . . In the scorching summer of 1976 - the hottest since records began - Christopher Norton, his wife Laura and their young daughter Faye settle into their new home in north London. The faded glory of the Victorian house is the perfect place for Norton, a composer of film soundtracks, to build a recording studio of his own. But soon in the long, oppressively hot nights, Laura begins to hear something through the crackle of the baby monitor. First, a knocking sound. Then come the voices . . . Paperback: 400 pages   Publisher: Pan (8 May 2014)     My Review The Voices is an utterly engrossing tale that is ever so creepy in places! Tallis writes fantastically and I think the subtle way he plays out the chilling details makes things all the more sinister. I loved how the story built slowly, giving little hints but never giving away too much. I never had any clue which direction the stor...

Flashes by Tim O' Rourke - Blog Tour!

Summary from Goodreads Flashes is the first in a new series of YA paranormal crime novels in which a 17-year-old girl cannot help seeing glimpses of dead people who seem to want her aid - much to the consternation of her boyfriend, who has just started work for the local CID. ***This is the full paperback novel--which was originally released in three separate parts over the course of three months via ebook. Paperback , 352 pages Published June 5th 2014 by Chicken House Ltd  My Review Wow! Flashes is an extraordinary crime/thriller with a fantastic supernatural twist. I loved so much about it and the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I sussed out the mystery quite early on. Saying that, it still thrilled and excited me seeing everything unravel for main character, Charley. I really really liked Charley. She's a bit of a loaner but is strong willed and really down-to-earth. After the death of her best-friend, her life seems to fall in around h...

Beyond the Door by Maureen McQuerry - Blog Tour!

Beyond the Door Blog Tour What have I learned about the world from myth as a writer and a reader? Since writing Beyond the Door and The Peculiars I’ve been thinking about why myth matters. During this tour I’ve blogged in the U.S and U.K. about six things I’ve learned from mythic stories that have inspired me. The links are below in case you missed any! Today I’m sharing some of the books that have inspired me. Favorite Mythic Stories When I was small my mother read me stories from The Tall Book of Make Believe ( http://www.amazon.com/Tall-Book-Make-Believe-Jane-Werner/dp/0060265051 ) and Andrew Lang’s classic fairytale books. When I went to the library I always headed straight to the fairytale section. Those early stories had a huge impact on me. For years I remembered snatches of a story about a girl who jumped rope (skipped) with fairies. She could jump through a key hole and land on a spiderweb without breaking it.   It was years before I found it again: Elsie Piddock Ski...
