Now that I'm working full-time as a young adult librarian I haven't been posting nearly as much, but I wanted to at least do my end of the year lists! 1) Ms. Marvel: Generation Why by G. Willow Wilson I love this comic series overall, but this one so clearly nails a lot of the things I've heard from teens recently. Their annoyance at older generations misjudging and underestimating them, their ability to come together despite differences, and their genuine desire to make their worlds a better place. Kamala Khan is just a fabulous protagonist overall, relatably trying to juggle her friends, family, faith, education, and, oh yeah, newfound superpowers. Plus, the cameos. The cameos. So many familiar faces from the Marvel universe have appeared, which is especially fun because Kamala is such an unabashed fangirl. My Review
This is a wonderfully warm and inviting Christmassy tale that is just perfect to curl up with on those long dark nights.
There is a lot of fluffy and light themes throughout this story but also a lot of drama and more serious backdrops to keep you completely hooked.
Rosie Hopkins is a London city gal, living in a small town with her boyfriend, Steven. Rosie own the gorgeous little old fashioned sweet shop that was previously run by her great aunt. Rosie still feels like an outsider in the little village and she has the step-mother from hell - who also lives in the village (awkward)!
But everyone's lives are well and truly turned upside down when a horrific accident rocks the village.
Jenny Colgan is a beautiful writer, her lush snowy descriptors are just stunning and the magical little sweet shop is beautifully imagined and brought to life. I would of loved to have just lost myself in among all of those delights. Her ability to convey emotion is wonderful and I think there is just the perfect amount of light and shade throughout.
The ending is just....sighingly perfect!
Christmas at Rosie Hopkins' Sweet Shop is a must read winter warmer that has a little bit of everything nestled within it's pages: Great characters, gorgeously rich descriptors, bucket loads of emotion, family love/drama, humour, big shockers, disasters and not forgetting a birth and also a death! A really lovely Christmassy tale that also tackles some more serious issues.
