Top Ten Teen Books of 2015

Now that I'm working full-time as a young adult librarian I haven't been posting nearly as much, but I wanted to at least do my end of the year lists! 1) Ms. Marvel: Generation Why by G. Willow Wilson I love this comic series overall, but this one so clearly nails a lot of the things I've heard from teens recently. Their annoyance at older generations misjudging and underestimating them, their ability to come together despite differences, and their genuine desire to make their worlds a better place. Kamala Khan is just a fabulous protagonist overall, relatably trying to juggle her friends, family, faith, education, and, oh yeah, newfound superpowers. Plus, the cameos. The cameos. So many familiar faces from the Marvel universe have appeared, which is especially fun because Kamala is such an unabashed fangirl. I really can't praise this series highly enough- just go check it out for yourself. 2) Lumberjanes by Noelle Stevenson Sensing a theme? 2015 was a huge year for ...

The Secret

Deeper by Robin York - Blog Tour!

Summary from Goodreads

When Caroline Piasecki's ex-boyfriend posts their sex pictures on the Internet, it destroys her reputation as a nice college girl. Suddenly her once-promising future doesn't look so bright. Caroline tries to make the pictures disappear; hoping time will bury her shame. Then a guy she barely knows rises to her defence and punches her ex to the ground.

West Leavitt is the last person Caroline needs in her life. Everyone knows he's shady. Still, Caroline is drawn to his confidence and swagger - even after promising her dad she'll keep her distance. On late, sleepless nights, Caroline starts wandering into the bakery where West works.

They hang out, they talk, they listen. Though Caroline and West tell each other they're 'just friends,' their feelings intensify until it becomes impossible to pretend. The more complicated her relationship with West gets, the harder Caroline has to struggle to discover what she wants for herself - and the easier it becomes to find the courage she needs to fight back against the people who would judge her.

When all seems lost, sometimes the only place to go is deeper.

My Review

Oh my Gawd! It's not too often that a books characters bounce right out of the pages and win you right over with their scrummyness! It's fair to say that West Leavitt is one heck of a guy who I think everyone out there needs to meet for themselves!

I like the serious note that surrounds this storyline - revenge porn (non-consensual pornography) is a very real and very damaging thing. It is degrading for men/women and it wrecks their lives in so many different ways. Our main character, Caroline, is a victim of revenge porn after she splits with her boyfriend. Robin York brilliantly tackles this tough topic and I think forces us to sit up and take notice of this horrible thing that happens everyday - it's actually perfectly legal in nearly everywhere in the United States!

Caroline Piasecki is a wonderful character, she has her life mapped out and knows what it's going to take to get her there. She is a good, quiet girl who studies hard, but her life and dreams are shattered when her naked sex pictures are posted online for the world to see. She feels disgusting and horribly let down by her ex, but more than that, she knows everyone at her collage has seen them.

She tries to keep her head down and get on with trying to salvage her ruined reputation, when a guy she doesn't really know punches her ex in front of everyone. Caroline knows West Leavitt is trouble with a capital T, but she can't help that her head is turned by his easy confident swagger. She knows he's the last thing she needs and knows she needs to stay away....

This story is an emotional roller coaster ride. I was angry at what happened to Caroline and also at how annoying Caroline and West were at admitting their feelings for each other. Their relationship is so damn complicated and it drove me insane!

After delving into West's past, it's easy to see that he has had it very hard and that there is so much more to him than this bad boy persona he has going on. He is loving, caring and just an all round beautiful guy. He is everything Caroline needs and is the only person that could help her stand up to her demons.

Deeper is one hell of a ride! It tackles tough topics while still being fun, wild and free. It shattered my heard a million times, frustrated me and also made me furious! The love story is broken, real and very beautiful. The end is just *sigh* - bring on the nest book already (I'm missing West already)

5/5 Stars!

Seraphina
