Now that I'm working full-time as a young adult librarian I haven't been posting nearly as much, but I wanted to at least do my end of the year lists! 1) Ms. Marvel: Generation Why by G. Willow Wilson I love this comic series overall, but this one so clearly nails a lot of the things I've heard from teens recently. Their annoyance at older generations misjudging and underestimating them, their ability to come together despite differences, and their genuine desire to make their worlds a better place. Kamala Khan is just a fabulous protagonist overall, relatably trying to juggle her friends, family, faith, education, and, oh yeah, newfound superpowers. Plus, the cameos. The cameos. So many familiar faces from the Marvel universe have appeared, which is especially fun because Kamala is such an unabashed fangirl. My Review
Woo hoo! Vampire fiction is most definitely not dead! Holly Black has restored my faith in the vampire genre and I was ever so excited about blood suckers all over again.
I loved that the storyline was set in a very thrilling dystopian future. Where vampires are forced to live contained in Coldtowns, to try and minimise the serious threat they pose to humanity. Inside these alluring walled cities, the undead prey on human inhabitants - who are actually there because they choose to be.
Our main character Tana, wakes up after one hell of a party to find the party goers scattered around as corpses. Armed with only her charming but infected ex-boyfriend and an intriguing but deadly vampire, Tana makes her way to deliver them to Coldtown's clutches.
I loved those big chilling and very atmospheric moments that were filled with blood and bodies. Black sets the perfect scene and I really enjoyed all of those super tense moments. I found that the middle of the book lost a little momentum though, it seemed to drag in places and to be honest I felt like not a lot happened in those slower moments. Everything picked up pace again towards the end though.
The simmering back round romance was interesting and I could very easily see Gavriel's allure - dark and brooding bad-boy alert! Tana let the romance unfold naturally and that's another reason I really clicked with her. She is also tough, down-to-earth and will do whatever it takes to survive.
The Coldest Girl in Coldtown is a wickedly inviting tale filed with action and bloody adventure. I enjoyed loosing myself in the enthralling and seemingly glamorous Coldtown itself - where nothing is quite as it seems and you need to fight for survival at every turn. More than anything else I would love to dive into another Coldtown adventure.... *hint hint Holly Black* ;)
